@ Neotropic Cormorant - Both birds were present at the previously posted
location at Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge on Monday morning. The birds were
observed between 7:30 and 8:15am. By 8:15am all of the Cormorants, including
the Neotropic had left the dead trees that they had been observed resting on.
The Cormorants had been observed at this location on Sunday evening at 7:00pm
to dusk, but we were unable to pick out the Neotropic Cormorants that
evening. Note the previous postings about the direction you look. Morning puts the
sun at your back, but if you walk through the field in the evening you should
be able to get close enough to ID the birds.

Other species observed in the area.
While leading a field trip for the Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter, to
Lac Qui Parle State Park our group observed the following species, in addtion
to the Neotropic Cormorant.

@ Clark's Grebe - Thielke Lake - 8/19 - A single adult was observed from the
West side of the lake between 1:30 and 1:50pm.
@ Eared Grebe - Many observed on Salt Lake including many still on nests.
@ Cattle Egret - Grant County location - near Pelican Lake 78 birds observed
at 6:15 - 6:45pm on 8/19.
@ Willet - 8/19 - 3:00 - 3:30pm - The same bird was observed at two different
locations, that are close to one another. Big Stone County - SW corner of
Hyw 28 & CR 61 and about 1/2 mile West of CR 61 on the N side of Hyw 28.
@ Buff-breasted Sandpiper - 14 birds were observed at the Willet location
along Hyw 28, west of CR 61. There is an extensive grassy area and it is likely
that more birds were present.
@@ All toll 18 species of Shorebirds were observed and we observed
approximately 30 locations where shorebirds were present. Each offering a little
different mix. The better locations were the two in Big Stone County, the Refuge
and Salt Lake. Other species noted were, Marbled Godwit, Wilson's & Red-necked
Phalarope and American Golden & Black-bellied Plover.
@ Eastern Screech Owl
@ Western Kingbird
@ Yellow-throated, Philadelphia, Red-eyed and Warbling Vireo - 8/19 -
Observed at Lac Qui Parle State Park
@@ We also hit several nice waves of Warblers at the State Park including,
Tennessee, Nashville, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Blackburnian, Wilson's and
Canada.
@ Orchard Oriole - Lac Qui Parle State Park
