The St. Paul (north) CBC on Saturday recorded 50 species so far plus the =
bird mentioned in the subject line. This is our lowest species count in =
a good many years, but we did find some "good" birds:
- 3 American White Pelicans near the Pig's Eye Lake Metro wastewater =
treatment plant, a first for the St. Paul count
- A Snowy Owl at Crosby Farm Park
- A Fox Sparrow, 2nd ever on the St. Paul count, the first coming two =
years ago.
- An apparent Pheucticus grosbeak (Rose-breasted or Black-headed). The =
observers gave a convincing description of a first-winter male of either =
of these species, but they were not aware of the distinctions between =
the two, and they did not note anything that would clinch the =
identification. (I've found reports of Black-headed in Iowa in winter, =
so I don't know if it can be ruled out.) They saw the bird near a house =
that has multiple feeders and a heated bird bath. The neighboring yard =
has active feeders as well, and the two yards together are very birdy. =
I visited the area with the observers yesterday afternoon. We did not =
see the grosbeak, but we spoke with the homeowner, who invited us to =
return anytime to look for it. (The homeowner did not recognize the =
bird when we showed her illustrations in field guides.) The location is =
a block south of County Road F, near Elmwood Street and Clover Avenue in =
Vadnais Heights. If you live in this area, please keep your eyes peeled =
for this bird.
