January 1, 2004,

Spent the day checking for some recently reported species in North Eastern
Minnesota with a small group of friends. We tried many spots in the Sax Zim bog
area without success for Great Gray Owl and missed on the Black-backed
Woodpecker on CR 213 as well. But we were successful on the following species.

@ Pileated Woodpecker - Fly by on I 35 in Pine County
@ Harlequin Duck - 9:00 - 9:30am St. Louis County, at the mouth of the French
River
Lake County - Two Harbors
@ Harlequin Duck - 10:30am - in agate bay feeding along the rocky shoreline
closest to downtown Two Harbors.
@ Bufflehead - Agate Bay
@ Common Merganser
@ House Sparrow - several flocks of 50+ observed in the downtown area
Lake County Road 9
@ Pine Siskin - near the intersection of CR 9 & the Expressway
@ White-winged Crossbill
@ Red-breasted Nuthatch
Saint Louis County
@ Hoary Redpoll
@ Gray Jay
@ Boreal Chickadee - Owl Avenue, 3/4 of a mile South of CR 52
@ Pine Grosbeak
