Friday, May 21 Shawn Conrad, Aaron Alto and I did an Itasca County Big =
Day.
We totaled 117 species.
=20
We found 16 species of warblers and 10 species of sparrows. We came up
short on waterfowl, saw no wrens and we missed some easy species like =
Coot,
Brown Creeper, House Finch, Pied-billed Grebe and both kinglets.
=20
Highlights included:
=20
Red-necked Grebe (several beautiful birds at White Oak Lake and Lake =
Winnie)
Evening Grosbeak
Green Heron (Forest History Center)
Common Nighthawk (perched on a branch at the Forest History Center. =
None of
us had seen a nightjar perched before so this was a special treat)
White-crowned Sparrow (two late birds foraging along the shore of Lake
Winnie, of all places)
Whip-poor-will (heard early in the morning along CR 325)
Le Conte's Sparrow (heard singing in a field along CR 434)
Wilson's Phalarope (White Oak Lake)
