This is the Duluth Birding Report for Wednesday, May 26 2004, sponsored 
by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Jim Lind found a BLACK VULTURE late this afternoon in Lake County along 
Hwy 61 about 7 miles northeast of Two Harbors near the intersection 
with Gate 11 Road in the Encampment Forest area. The land alongside the 
highway here is private property, but the bird was with a group of 
TURKEY VULTURES and may come out to the highway for roadkill.

Mike Hendrickson found a breeding plumage PACIFIC LOON yesterday on 
Lake Superior off the beach at Park Point. The bird was seen again 
today, along with four RED-THROATED LOONS. At least one sub-adult GREAT 
BLACK-BACKED GULL is still around, seen today at Hearding Island.

There are still hundreds of terns in Duluth. Most are COMMON TERNS, but 
there are also CASPIAN TERNS and FORSTER'S TERNS, in addition to a 
second-hand report of 40 BLACK TERNS seen off the beach at Minnesota 
Point yesterday, and an ARCTIC TERN found by Mike Hendrickson on 
Monday.

Two WESTERN GREBES were at the Superior Entry today. Jim Lind also 
found an EARED GREBE at Flood Bay in Lake Cty on the 21st. Two HORNED 
GREBES were at Park Point this morning. Two WHIMBRELS were on the beach 
at Park Point this morning, and one was on the beach at Wisconsin Point 
yesterday morning. Kim Eckert found a LAPLAND LONGSPUR near the airport 
at Park Point today.

On the 20th, Dory Spence had a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in her yard near 
Schroeder. Karol Gresser reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Cary Lake 
Recreation Area in Hibbing on the 22nd and 23rd. Uwe Kausch had a 
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the Wildwood Road today.
