Then turn left (south), onto Hwy 26.
Proceed 8.6 miles through Brownsville (lunch at The
Copper Penny in Brownsville: tell them you are a
birder). Stop south of Bsville at Fire # 11258 to
scope for late Killdeer & Common Snipe. This location
along Hwy 26 known as Wildcat Creek. Unmarked.
Continue 1.4 miles to Shellhorn Dr. (also Shellhorn
Bar & Cafe) 200 yards or so south of Mile Marker 12.
First big numbers of swans here.
Continue 0.9 miles to near MM 11 and railroad number
147 (track parallel and below hwy). Swans here.
Continue 0.3 miles to delta of Clear Creek
(unlabelled). Hwy drops down and right across creek-no
bridge. Entrance to state forest road west side of
hwy. Swans close here. Good view east.
Continue 1.2 miles to viewing deck. Swans & waterfowl
here.
Continue 0.7 miles to wide gravel pulloff east side of
road. Fire numbers here 15587 east side of road &

public access to river.
So, best viewing between Mile Markers 12(N) & 9(S).
Mile marker numbers start at the Iowa border north
edge of New Albin, IA.
Hwy 26 lacks paved shoulder & is narrow.
