Spent the morning birding Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, with Jeanne and Rick
Specht. There were plenty of migrants to study and we also had great looks
at Henslow's Sparrows and a singing Male Hooded Warbler. We encounter 18
species of Warbler and a number of Thrushes. Here are some of the highlights:
@ Northern Shoveler
@ Red-shouldered Hawk - Heard and seen near trail intersection marker #12.
@Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
@ Eastern Kingbird
@ Yellow-throated Vireo
@ Blue-headed Vireo - Found between trail intersection #'s 13 & 12
@ Sedge Wren - many along the trails between trail intersection #'s 31, 28,
33, 32 & 31.
@ Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - numerous throughout park
@ Veery - found between trail intersection # 1 and the main parking area on
CR 75(Murphy
Lake Road)
@ Hooded Warbler - A male Hooded Warbler was observed between trail
intersection #'s 14
& 13. This bird appeared to be singing on
territory and with some
patience was very easy to get some great!!!
looks at.
@ Eastern Towhee
@ Henslow's sparrow - We encountered at least 6 birds singing along the
trails between trail
intersection #'s 29, 30, 31, 28, 33, 32 &
31. For those with less time,
one was easy to see between marker's # 29
and 30. It was singing
on the South side of the trail and was
about twice as far from the trail
as one would think. Thanks for all those
that have posted this
location in the past, was fun to finally
get out and see the area for
myself.
