Thank you for the many response.  99.9% had then down as Northern 
Flickers.  By shape and size, behavior and location, that seems to make 
the most sense.  I guess I just don't see them around as much, sadly, 
and forgot their characteristic white flash patch.  Thank you for the 
many responses.

By the way, now the Cardinals are eating the grape jelly and even the 
House Wren checked it out although I didn't see it eat any.  Must be 
some magic in that off-brand, mega-jar of grape jelly I bought at the 
local Rainbow.
