Hello birders,
The Trumpeter Swan Society is interested in hearing reports of
wintering Trumpeter Swans in Minnesota. Due to the warm weather this
winter with all the open water, groups of Trumpeters are more dispersed
this year than usual. The Monticello wintering site has many fewer
swans than in previous years, averaging this winter between 300-500
birds. There are 200+ swans at Three Rivers Park District swan refuges
at Baker and Lake Rebecca Park Reserves (where a handful of captive
swans are kept) and ~ 250 birds on the St. Croix River near Hudson.
Typically, there are ~ 400 swans on the Otter Tail River near Fergus
Falls. 110 + Trumpeters are wintering in Arkansas, and there are
assorted groups of swans wintering in Iowa, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
Cygnets stay with their parents during the first winter and are still
quite gray at this time. Trumpeter Swans are also often decoyed in to
the ponds maintained by private waterfowl hobbyists.

We would appreciate hearing from birders in their travels around the
state if other locations with swans are noted.

Thanks,
=20
