This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday January 18th 2007.
On the 14th, Mark Ochs and Jim Mattsson found a SLATY-BACKED GULL along
the Mississippi River at Point Douglas Park, Washington County. Point
Douglas Park is on the Minnesota side of the river, across from
Prescott, Wisconsin at the confluence of the St Croix and Mississippi
rivers.
On January 18th, the GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was still visiting the feeder
in the town of Mountain Lake, Cottonwood County. In the town of Mountain
Lake, take the first exit from State Highway 60 onto 3rd Avenue and
drive to 10th Street. Turn north on 10th street and drive to the edge of
town to a cemetery and lake on the left. The feeder is in front of the
pale green house, which is the second to the last building on the right
side of the road.
The three GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES at the Fond du Lac Resource
Management Division office just west of Cloquet in St. Louis County were
all seen as recently as the 18th.
On January 17th, the NORTHERN HAWK OWL was still present north of Duluth
on the east side of St. Louis County Road 4 about a quarter of a mile
north of its junction with Martin Road. A SNOWY OWL was seen near the
Minneapolis - St. Paul airport on the 15th, and it has since been
reported at various points along Cargo Road. The SNOWY OWL northeast of
the town of Plainview was seen again on the 15th, along Wabasha County
Road 14 at 580th Street. Another was along 35th street, west of Raleigh
Street and east of state highway 100 in St. Louis Park, Hennepin County,
on the 13th.
Ron Erpelding reported an adult GOLDEN EAGLE on the 14th, just north of
the Felton Prairie on the north side of Clay County Road 34.
Cathy Leece found a VARIED THRUSH in Keewatin, St. Louis County on the
14th, though the bird has has apparently been around for a couple of
weeks. The location is on the west end of 3rd Avenue near the Mesabi
trailhead.
And Jim Mattsson found a female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD southeast of Hastings
in Dakota County on the 18th. This was at the junction of 175th Street
east and Presley Circle. From Ravenna Trail go west on 175th for half a
mile and look for the bird on the north side of the road.
