This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, January 19,
2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The first and so far only really cold week has passed and bird and human
activity has been not much more than enough to survive. A few hardy
birders are combating seasonal affective disorder by getting out anyway,
and have reported several interesting species. Conditions for winter
birding are very good this year in the northwest as the roads, while
icy, are clear of snow and the woods offers good walking.

As reported by Beth Siverhus, a VARIED THRUSH is being seen at the home
of Joyce Wright in Warroad , Roseau County. The bird was first seen
before Christmas and was seen as recently as January 13. Beth reported
an AMERICAN ROBIN and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the city of Warroad on
January 16.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County near Lancaster saw RUFFED GROUSE and
SHORT-EARED OWLS on his property on January 12.

ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and several SNOW BUNTINGS were reported by a hardy
visiting birder in northern Beltrami County on January 15.

In Marshall County, Cliff Steinhauer saw two GRAY JAYS at his place near
the west entrance to Agassiz NWR on January 17.

Herb Dingmann and Ron Erpelding were birding in Norman County on January
17 where they found a GRAY JAY north of Syre, east of MN 32. A GREAT
HORNED OWL was in the conifers there also. GRAY JAYS were also found
northeast of Twin Valley on the west side of CR 29, a HARRIS'S SPARROW
in Ada, and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, and a BALD EAGLE near Ada. There were
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in a spruce tree at the Gary Pines rest area.
Other species in the county included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE,
and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.

A GOLDEN EAGLE was found by Herb Dingmann and Ron Erpelding north of
Felton Prairie in Clay County on the north side of CR 34 on January 17.
SHORT-EARED OWL and GREAT HORNED OWL were seen at Bluestem Prairie. Two
groups of SNOW BUNTINGS , each numbering over 1000 were seen in Clay
County - one was near Bluestem Prairie, the other at the Twin Valley WMA
just south of the Norman County line. In Moorhead, they saw WILD
TURKEYS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and PURPLE FINCH, and elsewhere in the
county there were GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, and NORTHERN SHRIKE.

Brian Newman found SNOW BUNTINGS, PINE GROSBEAK, PURPLE FINCH, RED
CROSSBILLS, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Tamarac NWR in Becker County
on January 14.

In Otter Tail County, Brian Newman found a roosting BARRED OWL at
Maplewood State Park on January 14.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Brian Newman, Cliff Steinhauer, Herb Dingmann,
Ron Erpelding, Joyce Wright, and Larry Wilebski for their reports. A
special thanks to the visiting birder, whose name I neglected to verify,
for calling in his sightings.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders

place. When reporting by email please put "NW Bird Report" in the

is Friday, January 26, 2007.
