1976Winter The most elusive of all owls was recorded 6 times: dead birds were found on 2-15 at Duluth (B. Rutke); 2-23 on the Sawhill Tr., Cook Co. (fide M. Carr); 3-7 at Two Harbors, Lake Co. (M. <;arr); 3-1~ Agassiz NWR (SV) and one InJured bird 3-20 in Duluth· a live bird was seen at Silver Bay, L~ke Co. on 2-16 (T. Martinson).

1982Spring 3-18 St. Louis AE, 3-19 row Wi G Kvale fide JG, Cook 3-19, 4-H, 4-6,11 SL, 3-7 to 4-11 Cook m.ob. From 3-3 to 4-10 a total of 24 were found on the North Shore (most dead or starving). On 5-3,6 a nest and three eggs were found; they hatched 5-24 to 26 and were gone by 6-3.
1982Summer Nested in Cook (The Loon 54:212-214). One heard 7/1 Hwy 169 (mile post 292) Itasca (RBJ).
1982Winter Reported in Cook where it was heard calling along the Gunflint Trail from l/20 thorugh 2/27 (KMH, JP/AM).

1983Winter Heard calling and/or seen at feeder on the Gunflint Trail in Cook, 1-25 thru 2-17 (KMH). Three Duluth area reports; one found dead in late Dec. 0. Evans, one at Stoney Point 2-10 (KE) and one heard 2276, L&F Weber. A south report of one found dead in western Hennepin Co., 1-24 (MRBA) but no details were ever received.

1988Summer Extensive field census in 1988: singing males identified at 37 locations in Cook and southeastern Lake, with two nesting records in Cook (The Loon 60:99-104). Also nested in St. Louis (six miles S. of Hoyt Lakes, nest apparently failed, SWIMS, AE) and Lake (12 miles SW of Isabella, three young fledged, SWIMS). An additional 56 singing males in Lake and St. Louis surveyed by SW et al.
1988Fall All reports: 10/29 and 11/10 Duluth (2 banded at Hawk Ridge) KE, 11/29 Cook KMH.
1988Winter Also an invasion year with 100 + individuals recorded, almost all were found dead from road kills or starvation, primarily in the northeast region. Also reported in Clay 12/5 LCT, Kanabec 12/31 JG and in Minneapolis 2/18 SC (The Loon 61 :85-87). \ ><'¥Northern Saw-whet Owl

1995Winter Record Invasion. Steve Wilson reports that 171 were found dead through spring 1996, mostly in the northeastern part of the state; this total does not include some individuals reported by other observers. Reported from 21 counties as far west as Roseau and Becker counties, and as far south as Kandiyohi, Sherburne, Hennepin, Anoka, Isanti, Chisago and Washington.
1996Spring Record 1995–96 invasion continued into spring; new reports of live birds included 3/2 Lake PN, 3/22 Beltrami JSt, 3/23 Cook OSL, 4/1 Lake SW/MS. Steve Wilson and others compiled an incredible total of 212 Boreal Owls (194 during the 1988–89 invasion); articles documenting this and the Great Gray Owl invasion are published elsewhere in this issue.
1996Fall Only report: two banded at HRNR, St. Louis Co. DEv.
1996Winter For the second consecutive winter, more than 100 Boreal Owls have been picked up starving or dead fide SW. Additionally, a number of individuals ventured south where reported from Kandiyohi, plus Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington in the Twin Cities area. A first county record established 1/27 Mille Lacs fide PP.
1997Spring Largest irruption on record with many south reports (The Loon 69:125–29). Reported through 3/22 at Springbrook Nature Center, Anoka Co. (The Loon 69:111–113). First county record Todd (March) ph. JSK. Despite high mortality during the 1996–97 irruption, 44 Boreal Owls were detected by Bill Lane during standardized surveys this spring in northeast Minnesota (The Loon 69:145–150). 3/1–31 Todd ph. JSK (The Loon 69:198). Record high total of 264 Boreal Owls during their 1996-1997 irruption (The Loon 69:125–129). [Corrected]

1998Spring Spring surveys in NE Minnesota by Bill Lane found only ten birds on territory.

1998Winter Reported calling from two locations along Lake Co. Rd. 2 in late February (2/21 fide KE and 2/24 fide SW/MS). Also reported 1/19–21 St. Louis SW/MS and 2/20 St. Louis (Fond du Lac) AH.
1999Spring April surveys in northeastern Minnesota by Bill Lane found 15 singing males with females detected on four territories. Two were heard 3/19 along the Stony River Forest Road, Lake Co. AH.
1999Fall Three were banded in St. Louis (HRNR in Duluth): 10/1 (relatively early) and two in November (DEv et al.).
1999Winter Reported calling as early as late Jan. along Lake Co. Rd. 2 fide FN. Two were heard on 2/28 along the Stoney River FR, Lake Co. AH, PS.
2000Spring All reports: 3/18 Lake (3 near Isabella) JLi, 3/18 Lake (same birds as 2/28, see winter report) AH, 4/8 Cook (Sawbill Trail) WM. Number of territorial males (7) surveyed by BLa down from previous two springs.
2000Fall Major irruption beginning 9/29 (found dead) and 10/6 (injured by hitting window) St. Louis fide KRE. Seven banded at HRNR (DLE et al.) and two dozen banded near Hartley Field (FN) in Duluth during November!
2000Winter Major irruption with high mortality (The Loon 73:143–151).
2001Spring Second largest irruption in state history (The Loon 73:143–151). Discovered as far south as 3/18 Carver (Victoria) JBr et al. First county record mid-March Clearwater fide BAB.

2005Spring Largest irruption in state history detected by banding along the North Shore of Lake Superior in late fall and multiple sightings in Aitkin, Lake, and St. Louis during winter season; high mortality beginning mid-January; details will be presented in a future issue of The Loon. 2005Fall Total of five banded in October along the North Shore of L. Superior in St. Louis FJN. Also reported 11/26 St. Louis (Hoyt Lakes) fide MLH.
2005Winter About seven individuals reported in contrast to last winter's record-setting irruption: 12/17–23 Cook BWS, mid-January Aitkin (found dead) fide AXH, 2/7, 2/16–17 St. Louis JCG, 2/9–16 Cook (same bird in December?) BWS, plus three found dead along the North Shore in late February. One of the latter (2/26 T61N, R2E, section 8, Cook DI) had been banded at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, Michigan fide SGW.

2012Winter10 No reports in December and only 1/5 Cook (3 miles west of Grand Marais) BWS, 1/10 St. Louis (Sax-Zim Bog) ChH through 20 January, but then the fourth largest invasion ever commenced and extended into the spring season. While the highest numbers were in St. Louis and Lake counties, individuals were also reported from Itasca, Roseau, Marshall, and Polk beginning in late January, and from Koochiching and Aitkin in February. Farthest south report 2/17 Pine (St. Croix S.P.) MaC.
2013Spring135 The fourth largest documented irruption (The Loon 85:148–149) lasted into the spring with many continuing north reports, one south report of an apparently healthy bird 3/16–17 Hennepin, and multiple discoveries south of deceased individuals 3/8 Sherburne, 3/19 Stearns, 4/21 Ramsey, and 5/7 Wright (record late south, ph. fide DAC). Late north 3/24 Clay ph. fide CRG, 3/24 St. Louis (staff at the Hartley N.C.), 3/26 St. Louis (Lester River Rd.) KJB, 4/1 Polk (deceased, East Grand Forks) VLa, and approx. 4/2 Cook FJN.

2017Winter81 In contrast to the paucity of reports in the previous four winters (five individuals total, and none in 2014 and 2015), there were many reports throughout this season, especially from St. Louis (most from various locations in the Duluth area and Sax-Zim Bog) and Lake (various locations near Lake Superior). Also reported from Aitkin, Cook (two locations), Crow Wing (two locations), Itasca, Roseau, and a new county record 2/10 Otter Tail †JsS. One south record: 1/5–8 Ramsey (Vadnais Lake) EzH, IsH, m.ob.
2018Spring1 Irruption from the winter season lasted into the spring with all reports from St. Louis: 3/4 (Sax Zim Bog) ph. JDB, ACr, 3/11 (Chester Creek) JGz, 3/17 (Sax-Zim Bog) LNl.

Except for 2012 and 2017, this species has been either unreported or very scarce in the winter season over the past decade.
