YearSeasonNS
1998Spring First state record 4/25+ Big Stone (Ortonville) KE, PE, mob (The Loon 70:199–200).
1998Fall Many unsubstantiated claims of up to five birds in Lyon (Lynd) throughout the second half of November. At least three were finally documented 11/27 by PBu et al. Despite the recent spread of this species into the Midwest, this represents only the second Minnesota record. Observers are encouraged to always exclude the very similar Ringed Turtle-Dove by carefully documenting plumage and voice whenever possible.
1998Winter Overwintered in Lyon (Lynd) RgS. Also reported 12/15 Freeborn (Alden) ABa, and 1/29–2/26 Rock and Pipestone (Jasper) RJ, RG et al.
1999Spring Fifth state record 5/29+ Mower (2) AnH, AH, mob (The Loon 71:236–237). Three in Lynd were last reported 3/9 (RgS).
1999Summer First summer records for the state (but likely not the last!). Three birds were observed on 7/25 at Jasper on the border of Rockand Pipestone counties (originally discovered in previous winter; see The Loon 71:139) KE. Also reported throughout the period in Mower (two birds, originally found in spring; see The Loon 71:236–237) mob.
1999Fall Up to four frequented a feeder in Martin (Fairmont) starting in mid-October (†EBK, †BSe video!). About the sixth state record, all since spring 1998. Three doves first found in late January 1999 continued in Jasper, Pipestone/Rock counties.
1999Winter Reported overwintering in Fairmont, Martin Co. BBo, EBK et al.
2000SpringOne report 5/31 Kandiyohi (Willmar) †RAE, †RJF. [Corrected]
2000Fall One was well-documented 9/30 and 10/9 Big Stone (Odessa) †KRE et al., †PHS. Two similar-looking doves in the area may have been this species, but unsatisfactory views precluded positive identification. About the eighth state record, all since Spring 1998 and all either adjacent to or south of the Minnesota River Valley.
2000Winter Two overwintered at feeder in Russell, Lyon County †RJS (The Loon 73:184–185).
2001Spring One at Springsteel Island north of Warroad 5/23+ Roseau †KJB provided the first record north of the Minnesota River Valley.
2001Summer Seen in widely separated areas of the state. One first discovered in late May was relocated 6/3 and 7/8 at Springsteel Island in Roseau Co. (photographed) †PHS, †PCC; another was seen 7/3 Renville (Renville) DDM, †RBJ. Minnesota's first confirmed nesting record was documented at Caledonia in Houston Co. (also a first county record) †PHS, †KAK, †FZL, †DDM (The Loon 74:195–200). In addition, there was an undocumented report in June from Jasper in Rock Co., where birds had been originally found in 1999 but could not be relocated in 2000; at least three were eventually documented there in September 2001. Two birds which may have been present during the summer were discovered 8/3 at Russell in Lyon Co. (see Fall 2001 seasonal report).
2001Fall A pair in Houston (Caledonia) fledged their third brood in September (The Loon 74:7–13). Breeding probably occurred at Russell, where an adult and juvenile were photographed 8/11 Lyon †PHS. Three birds reportedly present in Jasper since May documented 9/8–9 Pipestone/Rock †PHS, †KRE et al.
2001Winter Two birds were reported 12/15 Lyon (Russell) RJS, presumably the same individuals that were documented there in August.
2002Spring First reported at last year's breeding location early March+ Houston (Caledonia) JGa, FZL, †PHS. First county occurrence 4/13+ Grant (Herman) †SPM, DKM. Also see undocumented reports.
2002Summer Reported on nest (exact same location as previous year's nest) at Caledonia, Houston County (see spring report); at least one juvenile and two adults reported without details at this location during the summer. One reported by m.obs. since at least early May was first documented 6/18 Blue Earth (Amboy) †RBJ et al. Also observed and photographed 6/23 Grant (Herman) †PHS (originally discovered in April, see spring report). Additional undocumented reports were received from Lyon. This species has now been found in three of the past four summers, and seems destined to become Regular.
2002Fall Still present 8/24, 9/14 Blue Earth (Amboy) and through 9/25 Houston (Caledonia) m.obs. Previously documented at these locations in June and mid-May respectively. Also see undocumented reports.
2002Winter Reported without details on the Lac qui Parle CBC and 12/16 Lyon (Marshall) fide RgS.
2003Spring Three accepted records: 3/12 Carver (New Germany) ph. †RMD, 3/21+ Grant (max. 3 at Herman, documented 3/22) SPM, DKM, ph. DTT, SMT, m.ob., 4/9–20 Dodge (near Claremont) CAK, ph. †JJS, m.ob. Reported as nesting for third consecutive year in Houston (Caledonia) but identification not established. Also see undocumented reports.
2003Summer All reports: mid–late June Renville (Olivia), second county record (first at Renville) 3/17–4/12 †TDS, 6/30+ Pennington (possibly present at Thief River Falls since early June and joined by a second bird in August) GM, †PHS et al., 7/31+ Dakota (2 or 3 at Farmington) BSe, †PEB, m.ob. Nesting reported in Houston (Caledonia) for third consecutive year, but identification of the adults was not established.
2003Fall Found at “new” locations 7/31–8/23+ Dakota (2 or 3 birds first documented at Farmington 8/1, but up to 7 birds possibly present for a year or more according to residents) BSe, †PEB, m.obs., 8/11–17+ Chippewa (2 at Milan first documented 8/17, but also note recently accepted record from 1 June 2002) RBJ et al., †PEB. One at Thief River Falls, Pennington County, since June was joined by a second bird 8/17 (The Loon 76:105–106) JMJ, ph. JWL, †PHS; one lingered through at least 8/30 KRE et al.
2003Winter All reports were from locations where previously documented. Maximum of seven at Farmington, Dakota County where overwintered. Also reported 12/27 Lac qui Parle CBC (six at Milan), 1/2 Pennington (one at Thief River Falls) fide JMJ and 2/28 Houston (three at Caledonia) SPM.
2004Spring Nested again in Houston (Caledonia); first reported there 2/28 (3) SPM, 3/30 (adult on nest) ph. FZL, 4/30+ (3) ph. FZL, ph. †PHS. Documented for the first time in Traverse (5/1, Wheaton) ph. †PHS. Reported from known locations 4/10+ Dakota (2 at Farmington, but see winter report) †PEB, ADS, 4/14 Lyon (2) †RJS, 4/17–5/1+ Chippewa (3 at Milan) †BJU, 4/20+ Renville (3 adults at Olivia, nest-building observed) ph. TES, JMS, 5/21 Big Stone (Ortonville, the site of Minnesota's first record in Spring 1998) †BJU.
2004Summer Nest-building documented in Dakota (6/11, Farmington) †TAN (The Loon 77:54); nested again in Houston (Caledonia) KAK, ph. FZL. First county records 6/6 Yellow Medicine (near Clarkfield) †BJU, 6/28 Brown/Cottonwood (Comfrey) †CBr. Also reported from known locations in Chippewa (Milan), 7/14 Renville fide AXH.
2004Fall New locations 8/21 Swift (3 at Benson) ph. †PHS, 9/11–10/11 Lac qui Parle (2 at Marietta) †BWF, ph. †PHS, 10/10 Rock (near Blue Mounds S.P.) †JGW et al. Continuing reports from Chippewa (Milan), Dakota (Farmington), and Renville (Olivia).
2004Winter Only report north: 1/20 Grant (4 at Herman) SPM. South reports also from known locations: 12/15–26 Swift BWF, LS, 1/2–2/11+ Dakota (max. 6 at Farmington) DWK, JPM, m.ob., 2/26 Houston (Caledonia) SPM.
2005Spring Discovered at new locations 4/16+ Jackson (Heron Lake) DDM, BJM (single bird in April, two pair including female on nest 5/23 ph. †PHS), 5/28+ Lac qui Parle (Walter Twp., 2) BJU. On nest 5/8 Houston (Caledonia) FZL and 5/14 Dakota (Farmington) PEB; also reported from known south locations 4/21–30 Chippewa (2 at Milan) DBz, ph. MLH, 4/23 Lac qui Parle (Marietta) FAE et al., 5/29 Swift (2 at Benson) HFe. Though probably correctly identified, photographs were inconclusive for one seen 4/27–28 Winona CA. All north reports were from known locations where previously documented: 3/17+ Grant (4 at Herman) SPM, m.obs., 4/9+ Traverse (4 at Wheaton) SPM, ph. PHS. [Corrected]
2005Summer Presence in state continues to expand. Observed in new locations 7/5 Wabasha (1 at Plainview) †CCB, 7/22+ Otter Tail (3 at Ottertail) †JSz, m.ob. Continuing reports from Grant (Herman) and Traverse (Wheaton) north, and Jackson (Heron Lake), Chippewa (Milan), Lac qui Parle (4 locations), Swift (Appleton and Benson), Dakota (Farmington), Houston (Caledonia) south.
2005Fall Reported from new locations 9/14–10/7 Clay (Glyndon) †BWF, RBJ et al., 11/22+ Nicollet (3, east of Courtland) †RMD et al. Continuing reports from Chippewa (Milan), Dakota (Farmington), Lac qui Parle (2 at Marietta), Otter Tail (6+ at Ottertail), Renville (Renville). Also reported where previously documented 9/17 Yellow Medicine (2 at Clarkfield) DBi. Details insufficient to eliminate Ringed Turtle-Dove in Blue Earth and Lyon; the presence of a Ringed Turtle-Dove at the same location as the Eurasian Collared-Dove in Glyndon underscores the need to carefully document birds in new locations and to consider the possibility of hybridization. Also see undocumented reports.
2005Winter North reports included 1/1 Otter Tail (8, Battle Lake CBC) fide SPM, 1/25+ Grant (Herman) BJU. Reported from five south counties with a high count 1/28 Brown (10, Comfrey) †BTS; probably overwintered since eight birds still present 2/15 RBJ. Continuing reports from known sites: 12/8–26 Nicollet (3) RBJ, HHD, 12/26 Chippewa (2, Milan) BJU, 12/29, 2/23 Lac qui Parle (Marietta, overwintered?) BJU, 1/1–21+ Dakota (5, Farmington) m.ob.

Also see undocumented reports. African Collared-Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea), domesticated descendants of which were formerly referred to as Ringed Turtle-Dove, continues to be mis-identified as Eurasian Collared-Dove in urban areas of Minnesota; hybrids have been reported in other states. Though details are unnecessary for birds at known locations, documentation is still requested for potential first county records and all north records.
2006Summer Documented at new locations 6/4 Goodhue (one calling east of Kenyon) †CCB, 6/21–23 Stearns (two at Brooten) †RPR, PCC. Also reported 7/20 Kandiyohi (Prinsburg) RBJ. No details provided for potential first county records in Pope, Watonwan. Probable hybrid Eurasian Collared-Dove X African Collared-Doves have been reported in Minnesota and other states (domesticated descendants of the African Collared-Dove were formerly referred to as Ringed Turtle-Dove). Furthermore, African Collared-Dove continues to be mis-identified as Eurasian Collared-Dove in urban areas. Potential first county records submitted without details are not published.

Reported from known north locations beginning 3/10 Traverse (6 in Wheaton) and Grant (Herman) HHD. African Collared-Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea), domesticated descendants of which were formerly referred to as Ringed Turtle-Dove, may be mis-identified as Eurasian Collared-Dove, especially in urban areas; note that one was photographed 4/30 Wabasha (Plainview) DAC. Possible hybrid African Collared-Dove X Eurasian Collared-Dove 3/9–12 Otter Tail (Battle Lake) ph. †DTT, SMT.
