BIRDING REPORT:

Unseasonably warm temperatures have brought some migrants back much earlier than normal this year.

Early EASTERN BLUEBIRDS have been reported from Wilkin, Otter Tail and Becker Counties over the past week. These reports thanks to the Martinson's, Linda Rude, Bill Wyatt and Betsy Beneke.

Seven COMMON GOLDENEYES were found in the Otter Tail River at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge on 3/3/00 by refuge staff.

Two NORTHERN SHOVELERS and three ROSS'S GEESE were found by Steve Millard on the Neumann WPA in Otter Tail County on 3/1.

On 3/3 Eddy Edwards found a mixed flock of about 3000 NORTHERN PINTAILS and MALLARDS in Wilkin Co. at the Meadows WPA (Co. Rd. 26 and State Hwy. 9). Also seen in the area were REDHEAD, LESSER SCAUP, GADWALL and NORTHERN HARRIERS.

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen 3/2 by Bill & Mary Wyatt near their home in Becker County.

A COMMON LOON was spotted by the Jordahls near Pelican Rapids on 2/29.

AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were reported from in and near the Tamarac NWR this week by Kay Hartness and refuge staff.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was reported from near Maple Lake in Polk County on 2/26 by Bob & Eve Freeberg.

Birds reported by Gary Tischer from the Agassiz NWR include CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, BALD EAGLE, AMERICAN KESTREL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, HORNED LARK and COMMON REDPOLL.

Other birds mentioned this week include: Trumpeter swan, snow goose, Canada goose, red-tailed hawk, a "drumming" ruffed grouse, mourning dove, red-winged blackbird, dark-eyed junco, purple finch and American goldfinch.
