This has been very unsettled week, weather-wise, with rain scattered all over and amounts that vary tremendously, much wind, and even some sunshine. Temperatures have not been very warm during this period. Leaves are getting big and making it difficult to see the birds, particularly in the windy conditions.
In Lake of the Woods County Martin Kehoe, Jenny Moorman, and Cindy McDougal found 109 species in Lake of the Woods County. Included in those species were at least three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS. One was at the Faunce campground, and a nesting pair was seen at the Norris picnic area. Two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were found at Zipple Bay State Park beach, and a MERLIN was seen feasting on a catbird. Other species recorded on their June 1 Big Day included COMMON TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, BLACK TERN, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, BROWN CREEPER, WOOD THRUSH, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER. On June 4, Martin Kehoe reported four TRUMPETER SWANS on a beaver pond deep within the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County.
In Beltrami County, Martin Kehoe saw a GREAT GRAY OWL at milepost 47 along MN 72 on June 4.
Here in Pennington County, I have a secondhand report of a NORTHERN CARDINAL in the city of Thief River Falls.
A BURROWING OWL has been found near the Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County by Jason and Becky Ekstein on June 1. Nate Emery, in Polk County, reported 2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS a half mile north of the MN 102/ CR 46 intersection near the Tympanuchus WMA on private property; GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN broods, BLACK TERNS, WESTERN KINGBIRDS, and COMMON RAVENS have been seen around the Glacial Ridge Project. The WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen a mile west and a bit north of the Highway 32 Glacial Ridge Headquarters - just north of the gravel road before the Bradshaw gravel pit. From Rydell NWR, Danielle Olson sent a long list of species found at the refuge this week including COOPER'S HAWK, SWAINSON'S HAWK, SORA, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and COMMON NIGHTHAWK.
John Ellis visited Felton Prairie in Clay County on June 1 where he found 14 MARBLED GODWITS, CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, and ORCHARD ORIOLES. Conny Brunell in Clay County on June 3, saw 4 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS along about two miles of road in the northeast part of the county. They were along CR27 in the first two miles south of the intersection of CR 34 and CR 27 east of Felton.
