Cold temperatures have descended on the northwest, and we can expect the feeder activity to pick up as the birds look for easy pickings. Also this week a number of interesting non-resident species have been reported in the area.
Two SNOWY OWLS were reported this week. One, seen by John Ellis, was found on the edge of Clifford Lake 1.5 miles south of Osakis in Douglas County on November 14. The other was seen and photographed by a friend of Jeff Siverhus on November 17 on Rocky Point in Lake of the Woods County. I got a late reported of another SNOWY OWL seen at the north end of Northgate Road at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County on November 8.
Other species seen by John Ellis in Douglas County included WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS a mile west of Rose City along CR 66 on the weekend.
Brad and Dee Ehlers in Otter Tail County reported that the usual group of TRUMPETER SWANS have arrived near the inlet of the Otter Tail River into Otter Tail Lake. Also seen in Otter Tail County were several hundred SNOW BUNTINGS on November 18. By the next day, more than 100 PINE SISKINS had arrived at their feeder. Tom and Sheryl Smith, southwest of Fergus Falls, reported a variety of woodpeckers, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and a late immature ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on November 13.
Dallas Hudson reported a SHORT-EARED OWL 1.5 miles east of Akeley in Hubbard County on November 11. Another was reported by Scott Kahan at Hamden Slough in Becker County on November 14.
Wayne Brininger at Tamarac NWR in Becker County reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE on the south end of the refuge on November 17, and 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in the headquarters area on November 18. Beau Shroyer reported that BALD EAGLES were having a feast on trapped AMERICAN COOTS on the freezing Big Detroit Lake on November 18.
Ben Wieland reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD hanging out in Walker in Cass County on November 19. A SNOW GOOSE was also found at the Walker Super One.
Here in Pennington County, a lone WOOD DUCK was seen in the Red Lake River on November 15, and an AMERICAN ROBIN was also in the yard that day. On November 16, there was a RING-NECKED DUCK in the river. Most water in the area had frozen up by that time, and now I think the freeze up is complete. The first COMMON REDPOLL arrived in the yard on November 18.
At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County on November 16, 12 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, two NORTHERN HARRIERS, and a BALD EAGLE were seen on a quick trip through the refuge on the county road. On November 15, an AMERICAN WOODCOCK and a WESTERN MEADOWLARK were seen along CR 7. Three SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen on the west side along CR 7 on November 15.
While at Squaw Lake in Itasca County on the weekend, Beth Siverhus observer a few migrating TUNDRA SWANS, as well as common winter residents such as DARK-EYED JUNCOS, PINE GROSBEAKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.
Gretchen Mehmel reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL seen three miles north of the Norris Fire Tower in Lake of the Woods County on November 18. Other species seen in the forest include BALD EAGLES, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, GRAY JAYS, and PINE GROSBEAKS.
Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Ben Wieland, Beth Siverhus, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Dallas Hudson, Gary Tischer, Gretchen Mehmel, John Ellis, Scott Kahan, Tom and Sheryl Smith, and Wayne Brininger for their reports.
