This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 7, 2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

We are having a warm week throughout Minnesota, making winter preparations much more fun than usual. Warm breezes blow the leaves around, and migrating birds call as they pass overhead. Most of the leaves are down in the northwest now, gone with one day of strong winds. The last migrants are coming through now, and soon we will be left with only the species that spend the winter with us.

Teresa Jaskiewicz in Elizabeth in Otter Tail County reported on October 5 that a BALTIMORE ORIOLE was still in the yard eating suet. Other species seen there included RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, SWAMP SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. Brad and Dee Ehlers reported DARK-EYED JUNCO and 20 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in Maplewood State Park on September 29.

Marshall Howe in Hubbard County on September 30 saw HERMIT THRUSH, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. On October 1, he observed RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

In Pennington County, there are many migrating AMERICAN ROBINS, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County has a pair of GRAY JAYS at his cabin northwest of Lancaster this week.

Thanks to Brad and Dee Ehlers, Larry Wilebski, Marshall Howe, and Teresa Jaskiewicz for their reports.
