This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 20, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Fall has surely arrived now, and the reports coming in include some warblers and the beginning of the sparrow migration. Colors are appearing on the ash and poplar trees, and the first oak leaves are blowing down in the recent winds. Teresa Jaskiewicz at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center on September 18 reported TURKEY VULTURE, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, GREAT EGRETS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and LESSER YELLOWLEGS. At her home in Elizabeth, she observed AMERICAN WOODCOCK, GRAY CATBIRD, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW among others. On September 9, Marshal Howe observed a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD in Dorset in Hubbard County. On September 19, he reported many WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was still hanging around. Mark Otnes observed a COMMON RAVEN in Clay County on September 14, circling over the pine grove at the entrance to Buffalo River SP. Other species seen in the area included WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Sandy Aubol in Polk County reported the season's first HARRIS SPARROW on September 15. On the 16th, she saw GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,SWAINSON'S THRUSH, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, PALM WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER at her home in East Grand Forks. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen sitting on the local water tower. On September 17, a FOX SPARROW made an appearance.
