This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 8, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Snow is on the way, and the cold winds are blowing in the northwest. Most of the migration is over and now we are starting to see the typical winter residents. Teresa Jaskiewicz reported 5 male red crossbills, a fox sparrow, Harris's sparrow, American tree sparrows, and dark-eyed juncos in her yard near Elizabeth in Otter Tail County on November 6. Other species seen in the county included northern shrike and red-breasted nuthatch. Brad and Dee Ehlers found a barred owl on the south edge of Otter Tail County. They reported a large movement of tundra swans, and saw a rough-legged hawk and several bald eagles. In Wadena County north of Staples, Malcolm Gold saw 15 Bohemian waxwings on November 4. Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported 30 common redpolls and both red crossbills and white-winged crossbills on November 4. Tundra swans were migrating through the county on November 7 and a single snow goose was seen among them. On November 8, he saw a northern shrike near Dorset. In Crookston in Polk County, Sandy Aubol saw two pine grosbeaks, and a fox sparrow at the large cemetery on November 8. There were 40 snow buntings along CR 17 about 2.5 miles west of US 75. I found 4 white-winged crossbills at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Red Lake Falls in Red Lake County on November 4. Other species seen and heard included common raven, and black-billed magpie. In Pennington County , Shelley Steva reported a hermit thrush two miles east of the Seven Clans Casino on November 3. Also on November 3, I noted many geese including Canada goose and Cackling goose on the river in Thief River Falls. A red-breasted nuthatch was seen in our yard. On November 7 there were Bohemian waxwings there. At the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on November 4, there were greater scaup, lesser scaup, common goldeneye, and around the perimeter a small flock of common redpolls. At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Gary Tischer saw a short-eared owl south of the Maakstad Trail on November 6. He also saw some sandhill cranes and along US 59, a bald eagle. Two ruffed grouse were seen on the Maakstad Trail. Six evening grosbeaks were seen at headquarters on November 5 by Becky Carlson and Lynda Knutsen. A rough-legged hawk was seen by Gregg Knutsen on November 5. Other species seen at the refuge on the weekend included pine grosbeak and common redpolls. In Beltrami County, Skyler Vold found 13 white-winged crossbills on the southeastern side of Lake Bemidji on November7. Other species seen on the lake included 12 horned grebes and 3 red-necked grebes. Gretchen Mehmel in Lake of the Woods County, reported gray jays, red-breasted nuthatch, evening grosbeaks, and pine grosbeaks at the Norris Camp feeders this week. A rough-legged hawk, two great gray owls, and a northern goshawk were seen east of the Faunce Tower. Thanks to all who sent in their sightings this week.
