With the coming of the colder weather this week, birding seems to have picked up. We had a touch of snow early in the week, but nearly all has melted now, and with a warmer weekend ahead, the rest will probably go. This week thousands of CANADA GEESE have been heading south over the northwest.
Beth Siverhus saw ten PINE GROSBEAKS and some BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Warroad , Roseau County, on November 9.
From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and at the feeders there were PINE GROSBEAKS, EVENING GROSBEAKS and several WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on November 14.
Skyler Vold found a SNOWY OWL in the Bemidji Industrial Park on November 8. A BLACK SCOTER was seen on the east side of Lake Bemidji.
In Marshal County, Heidi Hughes observed a SNOWY OWL at the intersection of 190 St. and 310 Ave. NW just south of Warren on November 9. She also saw a GOLDEN EAGLE south of MN 1 near 290th Ave NW. Lynda Knutsen at Agassiz NWR reported RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PINE GROSBEAK, EVENING GROSBEAK, and COMMON REDPOLLS at the headquarters feeders this week. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen by Gregg Knutsen four miles east of Headquarters. Becky Carlson found a HOARY REDPOLL among the others at the headquarters feeders on November 13.
Shelley Steva saw a mixed flock of SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS in Pennington County on November 12. On November 13,Shelley found an AMERICAN KESTREL at the intersection of CR3 and US 59 and a NORTHERN SHRIKE at the intersection of CR3 and CR 24 . A NORTHERN SHRIKE appeared at our feeder east of Thief River Falls on November 13.
In Red Lake County , Shelley found PINE GROSBEAKS in Oklee on November 14, and on November 15, a NORTHERN SHRIKE a mile east of Plummer.
Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks , Polk County had RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 3 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, a SONG SPARROW , WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and PINE GROSBEAKS at her feeders on November 14. A GREAT HORNED OWL flew through the yard on November 15. Mike Christopherson in Crookston found 2 RED CROSSBILLS near the cemetery on November 9. Heidi Hughes reported BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, PINE SISKINS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD at the Audubon Center on November 13. Leon Thoreson reported RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, PINE SISKINS, RED CROSSBILLS, and COMMON REDPOLLS at his place near Climax.
Kristy May in Waubun, Mahnomen County, had PINE GROSBEAKS at her feeders on November 15.
Marshal Howe in Hubbard County this week reported 40 Bohemian waxwings in Park Rapids on November 11. Other species seen in that area included BUFFLEHEAD,AMERICAN GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, AMERICAN COOT, COMMON LOON, RING-BILLED GULL, and BONAPARTE'S GULL. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also seen, and on November 14, a PINE GROSBEAK.
Brad and Dee Ehlers in Otter Tail County saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Wee Town, 35 COMMON REDPOLLS south of Ottertail, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS six miles north of Morris along Pomme de Terre Lake.
