Now that migration is over, nesting is in full swing, and birds will become harder to find and identify. With the stormy weather of the past week and the increasing numbers of mosquitoes, sightings are down this week as folks are staying inside.
On June 24, I found that the GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER still nests in Hickory township in Pennington County. This is the third year in a row that I have found them there, and I also have a sighting from 2003 in the same location.
Emily Hutchins reported that she had found 3-5 HENSLOW'S SPARROWS and 2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS singing at Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County on June 19. Scott Meyer found a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE on the west side of the refuge near the intersection of 150th Ave SW and 300 St SW on June 19. He also saw AMERICAN BITTERN, MARBLED GODWIT, and UPLAND SANDPIPERS on the refuge. Sandy Aubol reported that she observed RED-TAILED HAWK, SEDGE WRENS, CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and BOBOLINKS on the greenway on the east side of the Red River on June 24.
Thanks to Emily Hutchins, Sandy Aubol, and Scott Meyer for their reports.
