Spring migration has started , even though we cannot see much of it. More reports of horned larks, snow buntings, and Lapland longspurs are coming in , as well as bald eagles near nest sites.
From Lake Carlos SP in Douglas County, Benjamin Eckhoff reported two PILEATED WOODPECKERS, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, two COMMON REDPOLLS, and a BROWN CREEPER around the feeders at the park. Other species in and around the park included BARRED OWL and, on the river, a few species of waterfowl. In the Alexandria area, he observed ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, HORNED LARK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and DARK-EYED JUNCO.
Alice Martin in Otter Tail County reported RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL , and COMMON REDPOLLS at her feeder in New York Mills on February 22.
In Hubbard County, Steve Dahl observed a GOLDEN EAGLE near Akeley on February 21.
Shelley Steva saw a SNOWY OWL near Sherack in Polk County on February 21 right where one or more have been seen most of the winter. Also in Polk County she saw 6 separate flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, and a HORNED LARK in a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS near Tabor. Emily Hutchins reported HAIRY WOODPECKER, COMMON REDPOLL, and a HOARY REDPOLL at her feeder near Mentor on February 23. Near the intersection of US 1 and MN 32, she saw more than 100 SNOW BUNTINGS, 2 HORNED LARKS and 50 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. Sandy Aubol reported seeing the AMERICAN KESTREL reported last week along US 2 near East Grand Forks on February 24. She also observed a NORTHERN SHRIJKE in her yard in East Grand Forks.
Barb and Denny Martin saw a GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN in southern Marshall County along CR 12 just north of CR 2 on February 26.
The two Eurasian collared-doves reported last week were re-located this afternoon by Barb and Denny Martin along Mussey St. in Thief River Falls, Pennington County.
Barb and Denny Martin reported seeing up to 10 separate NORTHERN HAWK OWLS north of Roseau in two days. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was chased away by one on the Sprague Creek road. A flock of RED CROSSBILLS was seen along MN 310 near the snowmobile trail. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also seen.
In Lake of the Woods County, Barb and Denny saw a HOARY REDPOLL at the Norris Camp feeder, and PINE GROSBEAKS at Norris Camp and on the Rapid River Road.
