We are in a summer pattern now in the northwest. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms have been a common occurrence over the last few days. Some areas both north and south of Thief River Falls have had very heavy rain, and the whole area is wet since it has rained at least a little everywhere in the area every day. If you plan to bird in the north, please be careful on the minimum maintenance roads as some are quite muddy and /or slippery.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was reported by Wayne Perala at Agassiz Waterfowl Management Area in Otter Tail County on July 8.

The SPOTTED TOWHEE reported earlier at Buffalo River State Park in Clay County was re-located in the same area where it was found by Barb and Denny Martin on July 10. It was seen on the south side of the river on the main trail leading from the main parking lot to the science center as you exit the woods into the second clearing.

Ron Erpelding observed an INDIGO BUNTING near the entrance to the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center west of Fertile in Polk County on July 8.

In Red Lake County on July 8, Ron and I saw a CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, BLACK TERN, and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS at the old gravel quarry in the far southern part of the county west of Highway 32. RING-BILLED GULLS were also seen, and Barb and Denny Martin spotted several three-quarters grown young still unable to fly on July 12. GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found on July 9 in the same general area. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen perched on a dead tree in Pennington County at the bridge along 140th St SW( the Pennington County Line) on July 8 and the bird then flew over the road into Red Lake County. On July 9, Ron observed UPLAND SANDPIPER north of the intersection of 220St SE and CR 114. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen two miles west of the Polk County line on the east central edge of the County. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen west of Huot near the intersection of 210 St SW and 170 Ave SW.

Other species seen by Ron and I in Pennington County included WILD TURKEY, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO on the west side of CR 27 near the southern end of the county, and 4-5 INDIGO BUNTINGS, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS east of CR 27 on the Clearwater County line. Ron also reported ORCHARD ORIOLE along the Pembina Trail.

Marshall County sightings by Ron Erpelding included at least 7 DICKCISSELS found east of Old Mill State Park near the intersection of CR 28 and CR 115 in a weedy field of sweet clover. I saw them today, and also in another similar field along CR 38 about 3 miles south of CR 28. Today, I found a TURKEY VULTURE flying over CR 28.

Ron Erpelding found an UPLAND SANDPIPER in Clearwater County near the Polk County border and an ORCHARD ORIOLE north of CR 60.

In Roseau County, Barb and Denny Martin found 5 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in the burn area 7.6 miles northeast of Hayes Lake State Park along the Thompson Forest Road. Ron Erpelding reported ORCHARD ORIOLE near Pelan along CR 11 on July 10. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was found on 160th AVE a half mile north of MN 11. INDIGO BUNTING was near the entrance to Norland cemetery northwest of Warroad near the intersection of CR 13 and 370th St NW.

In Lake of the Woods County, Barb and Denny Martin saw a SPRUCE GROUSE a few hundred yards east of Norris Camp on the Faunce-Butterfield Road. The bird was on the road at the first curve with two three-quarter grown young.

Thanks to Barb and Denny Martin and Ron Erpelding for their reports this week.
