We are white again in the northwest, especially in the ditches and sheltered areas, which caught all the loose snow blown off the fields by the high winds. Feeders have been busy , although the species count has been low. Most are seeing white-breasted nuthatches, black-capped chickadees, common redpolls, and some dark-eyed juncos. Snowy owls continue to be reported from various counties in the northwest.
In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported three SNOWY OWLS on December 1.
In East Grand Forks in Polk County this week, Jane Croeker observed a PILEATED WOODPECKER, Diane Wales saw a NORTHERN CARDINAL, and Sandy Aubol continues to report HARRIS'S SPARROW and RED CROSSBILLS. On December 2, Shelley Steva and Zeann Linder saw 5 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Fertile, a NORTHERN HARRIER, and in or near Glacial Ridge NWR, 6 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS and 17 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Shelley also reported a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near Brooks on December 3.
RED CROSSBILLS were reported in Becker County by Preston Flolo at Two Inlets State Forest on December 2nd.
Marshall Howe found a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Park Rapids in Hubbard County on December 2.
In and near Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Wayne Perala reported many LAPLAND LONGSPURS, SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS on December 6. Other species he observed included GREAT HORNED OWL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, more than 100 TRUMPETER SWANS, a COMMON GOLDENEYE, and one AMERICAN BLACK DUCK.
From Cass County, Dale Yerger reported that three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on December 2 near the Shingobee Sports Bar in Walker.
