This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, November 15, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
This week's report includes information about BRANT, ROSS' GOOSE, ICELAND GULL, THAYER'S GULL, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, NORTHERN HAWK OWL, BLACK SCOTER, and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER.
Craig Mandel reported finding a juvenile Brant at Deer Lake in Aitkin County on the 13th. Deer Lake is at the northeast corner of the junction of state highway 47 and Aitkin County Road 2. The nearest town to this location would be Malmo on the northeastern shore of Mille Lacs.
The Ross's Goose first seen on Nov 3 at Hearding Island on Park Pt was seen as recently as the 12th, along Railroad St. between the DECC and the Port Terminal.
The 1st-winter Iceland Gull and 1st-winter Thayer's Gull were still present in the Grand Marais harbor this week.
A few more early Snowy Owls have been reported, including on the 9th near Lester River. Unfortunately, this bird and several other owls reported recently appeared to be starving. If you live in the Duluth area and come upon a sick owl, you can call Dave and Molly Evans (724-0261) for assistance. An apparently healthy Snowy Owl was seen along Garfield Avenue in the Port Terminal on the 13th.
A N Mockingbird was first seen and heard singing Nov 2 in Duluth in the neighborhood of 13 West 8th St, which is just W of Mesaba Ave, and this bird was still present as late as the 12th.
Mike Overton reported a Northern Hawk Owl in the Sax-Zim area on the 9th. The bird was on McDavitt Road, 5.2 miles N of the Sax Road.
Black and White-winged Scoters continued to be seen near the Rowing Club on the harbor side of Minnesota Point, as recently as the 12th.
Winter finches continue to be seen around Duluth, including White-winged Crossbills seen near the intersection of 11th and 11th E as late as the 12th.
