This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, April 18, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The most active birding week in Duluth for months produced a large fallout of migrants at Park Point in the fog on the 16th. Mike Hendrickson found a HARLEQUIN DUCK at Park Point on the 15th, and Jeremy Ridlbauer found another in Grand Marais the day before. Ben Yokel saw an EARED GREBE in Melrude on the 17th.Kim Eckert found two meadowlarks on the the Lakewalk on the 12th. Frank Nicoletti found two SHORT-EARED OWLS at Park Point on the 16th.
Other migrants reported for the first time this week include COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, all the expected duck species except Ruddy Duck, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HERMIT THRUSH, CEDAR WAXWING, PINE WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW (in Two Harbors) FOX SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.
That NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD that has been near Mesaba Ave all winter is still present in the neighborhood from 8th to 10th streets. Several people are still reporting redpolls at their feeders. The record late dates for northern Minnesota are May 11 for Hoary and May 26 for Common. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen by several observers this week. Patrick McNulty found a SNOWY OWL in the harbor on the 14th.
The West Skyline Hawkwatch had a banner weekend, with almost three thousand raptors on Friday, another two thousand on Saturday, and over a thousand on Sunday. This movement of hawks, comprised mostly of RED-TAILED HAWKS, is remarkable for spring. Frank Nicoletti and Dave Carman also counted the first OSPREYS of the season and a larger than expected number of BALD EAGLES and NORTHERN HARRIERS.
A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS is attempting to nest on top of the Greysolon Plaza building in downtown Duluth. I am interested in information about Merlins nesting in Duluth. If you see a nest or a pair of Merlins courting, please leave a message about when and where you saw them.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, April 25. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
