This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 19th, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The Sax-Zim Christmas Bird Count tallied 25 species, including 13 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 18 BOREAL CHICKADEES (several along the Blue Spruce Rd),1 PINE GROSBEAK, 149 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS (on McDavitt Rd 2.6 miles north of the Sax Rd), 6 BROWN CREEPERS, and 101 PURPLE FINCHES. No owls found this year.

Kim Risen reported that the Crosby Christmas Bird Count included a very late WINTER WREN and RED CROSSBILLS on Cty Rd 28 south of Ironton.

Last Saturday brought record warmth for the Duluth Christmas Bird Count, when 52 species were counted. Highlights included 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK at French River, 8 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Eagle Lake, 1 adult GLAUCOUS GULL on an ice floe in front of Fitger's, 3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, one at the pine plantation at Hawk Ridge and two about a mile off the road from the intersection of Schultz and Arnold Road; 8 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 6 BROWN CREEPERS, 5 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (new for the Duluth count), and15 RED CROSSBILLS in the pines at Hawk Ridge.

Scott and Nan Wisherd reported 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS from the Superior Landfill on Saturday.
