This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 7th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The SLATY-BACKED GULL at the Superior landfill has been seen and photographed by several groups of birders as recently as the 6th. Other sightings at the landfill include two ICELAND GULLS, at least three THAYER'S GULLS, a second-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, and up to 14 GLAUCOUS GULLS. The GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was also seen at the WLSSD treatment plant and at Canal Park in Duluth on the 2nd and 3rd.

Mike Hendrickson found SPRUCE GROUSE on the 2nd in two locations west of Cook in northern St. Louis County. Two were seen along the Chisholm Road, 2 miles north of the Olson Road (CR 114). Another was found along the Lind Road (CR 85) at the intersection of MN Highway 73. Conny Brunell and Susan Schumacher found five SPRUCE GROUSE on the 2nd at three locations along Lake County Road 2. One was about 3 miles north of Greenwood Lake, two were 1.8 miles north of the Sand River, and two were 2.8 miles north of the Sand River.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog continues to be seen regularly along CR 7, 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road. Both AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were recently seen along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211), between 0.1 and 0.4 mile north of CR 133. Peder Svingen found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 0.3 mi north of the Zim Road (CR 27). Mike Hendrickson found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 1st along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.5 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Mike also saw four BOREAL CHICKADEES feeding at a deer carcass hung in a tree along the Admiral Road, 2.6 miles south of Zim Rd (Co. Rd 27). The feeding station along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) one mile north of CR 133 is still hosting EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and at least three HOARY REDPOLLS.

Shawn Conrad found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Itasca County on the 6th along US Highway 2, 0.5 mile north of the Aitkin County line. A SNOWY OWL was found on the 4th by Greg Stoewer in Carlton County, about a mile west of the Esko School in the Esko on Midway subdivision. Warren Nelson saw a SNOWY OWL in Aitkin County on the 7th northeast of the town of Aitkin along Highway 169/210 near 370th Lane, and another north of Aitkin along CR 1, just east of CR 22. One of the SNOWY OWLS at Airport Road in Duluth was relocated on the 3rd.

Sparky Stensaas found a flock of about 25 RED CROSSBILLS on the 6th in Itasca County at the Blueberry Ski Trails north of Deer River. Shawn Conrad found a flock of 20 RED CROSSBILLS on the 7th at the Grand Rapids fairgrounds.

Robin LaFortune found two flocks of about 20 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 5th northeast of Grand Marais at Paradise Beach in Cook County.
