This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 20th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The SLATY-BACKED GULL that has been reported from the Superior landfill for the past few months was found by Peder Svingen on the 15th on the Minnesota side of the Duluth harbor at Interstate Island. Peder also saw the Slaty-backed on the 14th at the Superior landfill, along with a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, two ICELAND GULLS, three THAYER'S GULLS, 17 GLAUCOUS GULLS, more than 1000 HERRING GULLS, and the first RING-BILLED GULLS of the spring season.
Other recent signs of spring include a singing DARK-EYED JUNCO found by Kim Eckert on the 20th at Chester Bowl in east Duluth, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, and TRUMPETER SWANS on the Mississippi River in Cohasset on the 15th and a TRUMPETER SWAN at Silver Lake in Virginia on the 20th. Deb Falkowski found a GLAUCOUS GULL on Silver Lake on the 19th.
Gordy Martinson reported a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on the 19th along Skyline Drive at Seven Bridges Road in east Duluth. Jan Green had a HOARY REDPOLL at her feeders on the 17th along the Old North Shore Road in Lakewood Township, and a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along MN Highway 61 in Lakewood Township on the 13th. Cindy Edwardson also saw a flock on the 17th at East Arrowhead Road and Vermilion Road in Hunter's Park, and Sparky Stensaas saw a flock on the same day along MN Highway 23 at the St. Louis River in Fond du Lac. The VARIED THRUSH and BOREAL CHICKADEE at a feeder in east Duluth were still present as of the 16th, and those interested in looking for the birds should call the homeowners (Christina and Dave) at 218-728-0808.
Warren Nelson and Bill Stauffer relocated the SNOWY OWL over the weekend in Aitkin County at Highway 210/169 and 370th Lane. They also saw a lek of 16 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along CR 16, 0.4 mile south of Tamarack. Dave Alexander relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 15th along CR 7, at the Sax Road (CR 28). Shawn Zierman saw three AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS on the 16th along the McDavitt Road (CR 213).
