This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 14th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several species of interest are still being reported from the Sax-Zim area, including the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along CR 7, 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road. Two AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were seen on the 12th along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211), about 0.4 mile north of CR 133. Byron Butler relocated an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 8th along the Admiral Road (CR 788), 0.1 mile north of the Zim Road (CR 27). He also saw an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 2.5 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). BOREAL CHICKADEES have been seen sporadically a deer carcass hung in a tree along the Admiral Road, 2.6 miles south of Zim Rd (Co. Rd 27). The feeding station along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211) one mile north of CR 133 is still hosting EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and as many as three HOARY REDPOLLS.
The VARIED THRUSH at a feeder in east Duluth was still present as of the 14th, and those interested in looking for the bird should call the homeowners (Christina and Dave) at 218-728-0808. Shawn Conrad has had a HOARY REDPOLL at his feeders in Bovey in Itasca County.
Cindy Risen found a SNOWY OWL on the 11th just south of McGregor along Aitkin County Road 8. Cindy also reports AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along Kestrel Avenue, about 1.5 miles north of Tamarack. A SNOWY OWL was reported last week in Cloquet at the Churchill School at 515 Granite Street.
