This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A female-plumaged BLACK SCOTER was found by Kim Eckert on the 2nd behind the WLSSD sewage treatment plant in Duluth, in open water visible from outside the gate at the end of 27th Avenue West. Kim also saw several GREATER SCAUP and a LESSER SCAUP here. Mike Hendrickson saw a migrating GOLDEN EAGLE and two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS on the 3rd in his yard in Smithville.
Jan Green had a HOARY REDPOLL on the 29th at her feeders along the Old North Shore Road near the Sucker River in Lakewood Township, and another individual on the 31st. Sparky Stensaas found a flock of 56 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 1st along Amity Road off the Jean Duluth Road.
Carol Tveekrem had an early YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on the 3rd in her yard at Schroeder, Cook County. Carol is also still seeing the HARRIS'S SPARROW that has been at her feeders since December.
Shawn Conrad and Earl Orf found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in Itasca County on the 29th in a spruce bog along CR 128 east of Deer River. They also found RED CROSSBILLS and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Veterans' Park in Grand Rapids, and a RUDDY DUCK on the Prairie River access off of CR B in Grand Rapids.
Other new arrivals over the past week include BLUE-WINGED TEAL and AMERICAN KESTREL on March 30th, COMMON GRACKLE on the 1st, PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, and NORTHERN HARRIER on the 2nd, and GADWALL and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT on the 3rd.
