This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, June 26th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two RED-THROATED LOONS in alternate plumage were found on the 26th by Peder Svingen at Park Point in Duluth. They were seen out from the recreational area bath house on Lake Superior. Peder also saw a WESTERN GREBE on the 22nd at 16th Street on Park Point.

Butch Ukura found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 20th along MN Highway 73, 6.7 miles south of Hibbing. Jason Caddy relocated the BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the McDavitt Road (CR 213) in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 22nd, and found another along the Blue Spruce Road less than a mile north of CR 133.

Sparky Stensaas found a nesting pair of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in Carlton County on the 20th along the Ditchbank Road, 1.25 miles west of the Mission Road (CR 25). He also found WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at several spots in the area.

The LEWIS'S WOODPECKER in the Billings Park neighborhood of Superior, Wisconsin was last reported on the 24th along the St. Louis River at the west end of 21st Street.
