This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The ROCK WREN at the Grand Marais municipal campground was relocated on the 27th along the lakeshore near the yellow maintenance garages. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen and photographed by Shawn Zierman on the weekend of the 27th near the boat launch at the campground. A VESPER SPARROW was found on the 28th near the rock piles at the Castle Danger landfill. Uwe Kausch found a GOLDEN EAGLE on the 1st along MN Highway 61 at the Homestead Road (CR 42). Jan Green saw single BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS migrating over Stoney Point on the 29th and on the 1st. A flock of 115 CACKLING GEESE was seen at the Two Harbors golf course on the 2nd.
More than 5,500 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were counted at Hawk Ridge on September 27th, representing a record-high count for Minnesota. More than 1,000 CACKLING GEESE, seven ROSS'S GEESE, and two RED-THROATED LOONS also flew past the overlook on the 27th. A Hawk Ridge record-high count of 333 SANDHILL CRANES was seen on the 1st, and 121 were counted the day before. Seven GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE flew over Hawk Ridge on the 30th and a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on the 29th.
An adult ROSS'S GOOSE was seen by several observers on the 1st at the Park Point recreational area ball fields. Mike Hendrickson saw a first-winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, and an unidentified JAEGER on the 27th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Erik Bruhnke saw a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and an unidentified JAEGER on Park Point on the 28th. Kim Eckert and others found a SURF SCOTER and a LONG-TAILED DUCK on the 28th on Lake Superior at Park Point. They also relocated the juvenile FRANKLIN’S GULL at the 12th Street access, and found an early THAYER’S GULL. The GREAT EGRET at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area was still present as of the 2nd, along with a juvenile ROSS’S GOOSE.
