This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 5th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several birders relocated the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the 5th at Canal Park in Duluth, as well as a forth-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, a first-cycle ICELAND GULL, and at least three GLAUCOUS GULLS. Erik Bruhnke also reported the first RING-BILLED GULL of the season from Canal Park on the 5th.
Rick Schroeder saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 1st in the woods on the east side of the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 3.1 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). He also saw a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the Blue Spruce Road (CR 211), 0.5 mile north of CR 133. Jason Mandich saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 27th on the Stickney Road (CR 207), and another on the McDavitt Road. Derek Bakken relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along the McDavitt Road about a mile north of the Sax Road. Ben Yokel found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 28th on the Melrude Road (CR 59) just south of the Berg Lake Road. Ben reported that up to three individuals were present in this area earlier in the week.
Jan and John Green found a GREAT GRAY OWL along MN Highway 61 at the Peterson Road in Lakewood Township. Several observers reported the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along MN Highway 61 at the Knife River crossing as recently as the 3rd. Derek Bakken relocated the NORTHERN HAWK OWL along the Jean-Duluth Road (CR 37) at the Beyer Road (CR 259) on the 28th.
Shawn Conrad found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and three BOREAL CHICKADEES on the 27th in Itasca County in a bog off the north end of old Highway 6, 0.3 mile north of CR 19. Shawn found another AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in a tamarack bog on the west side of the Baumgarner Road, 1.1 miles north of CR 19, and saw a BOREAL CHICKADEE at a suet feeder along the Alder Road (CR 253) north of Middle Creek, 3.2 miles north of CR 48. Shawn found another AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 2nd in a remote area along a ski trail south of the Wilderness Road, 0.5 mile east of MN Highway 38. The Wilderness Road is 1.5 miles north of CR 19, north of Grand Rapids.
Norma Malinowski saw 16 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Ely on the 5th on the north side of Miner's Lake between the Grand Ely Lodge and the Shagawa Lake boat launch.
