This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 2nd, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were found on the 2nd by Sparky Stensaas along the Stone Lake Road in the Sax-Zim Bog. Greg Seegert saw two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 27th along the McDavitt Road (CR 233) about 2.5 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28), and four SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the Arkola Road (CR 52) at the Stickney Road (CR 207). Greg also saw three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and a BOREAL CHICKADEE in Aitkin County along the Hedbom Forest Road, about 0.5 mile west of the county line, and two GREAT GRAY OWLS along CR 18 at the Pietz's Road.
Mike Hendrickson and Kim Eckert saw four THAYER'S GULLS on the 2nd at Canal Park in Duluth. Erik Bruhnke saw an immature GLAUCOUS GULL on the 28th at Canal Park. Chris Mansfield saw a SHORT-EARED OWL on the 27th at the Sky Harbor Airport.
Jane Johnson saw a LONG-EARED OWL on the 28th just off MN Highway 61 on the Sawbill Trail (CR 2) in Tofte.
Nate Popkin saw a flock of about 300 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 29th in downtown Virginia by Bailey's Lake.
