This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 26th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The KING EIDER found by Greg Garmer on the 12th and seen through the 14th was relocated on the 23rd by Karl Bardon at Brighton Beach in east Duluth. Larry and Jan Kraemer found what may be the same individual on the 26th at Greenwood Road and Scenic Highway 61 and it was later seen 0.25 mile west of the French River.
A flock of 17 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen on the 21st during the Two Harbors CBC at a feeder two miles north of CR 12 at the junction of Holm Road (CR 124) and Old Drummond Road (UT 10), northwest of Two Harbors. Also seen during the count was a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the Stanley Road (CR 9) three miles west of MN 61 and a GREAT GRAY OWL on the Stanley Road, 4.3 miles west of MN 61, another NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Two Harbors on CR 2, 0.8 mile north of MN 61, two LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Agate Bay and two at Stony Point.
GREAT GRAY OWLS and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS continue to be seen in the Sax-Zim Bog especially along McDavitt, Admiral, and Arkola Roads and along Owl Avenue, and in Aitkin County along CR 18, between Pietz's Road and the Hebron Cemetery. A SNOWY OWL has been seen in the Duluth Harbor near WLSSD and at the base of the Blatnik Bridge, and Terry Wiens saw what may be the same bird along the ridge top uphill from the new Lincoln Park School. Jan and John Green saw a SNOWY OWL on the 24th along Scenic Highway 61 just east of the Lakewood Pumping Station.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are being seen in Ely and along MN Highway 61 between Lutsen and Grand Marais.
