This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 24th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
With the recent extreme winter weather, there is very little to report outside of the Sax-Zim Bog. SNOWY OWLS continue to be seen along CR 7 near the Zim Road and along CR 27 near the Greenfield Road, and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS have been seen along Owl Avenue, along CR 27 west of CR 5, and along the Stone Lake Road. A GREAT GRAY OWL has been seen sporadically along the Admiral Road and two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen along the McDavitt Road on the weekend of the 15th.
The only recent gull reports I have are from the Superior landfill near Wisconsin Point. GLAUCOUS GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, THAYER'S GULL, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported on the weekend of the 15th. The western tip of Lake Superior is almost completely ice covered with only scattered open patches that change daily.
