This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 15th, 2015 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A COMMON GROUND-DOVE was found by Joseph Hudick and others on the 13th at the Sax-Zim Bog along the Cross Road, south of the Arkola Road and west of the Poplar Road. It has not been relocated.
A SUMMER TANAGER was found on the 14th by Kim Eckert east of the marina in Knife River, near the water tank along the America Dock Road. It was relocated by a few observers on the 15th. Clinton Nienhaus and others saw a PACIFIC LOON on the 15th near Knife Island in Knife River.
Alex Lamoreaux, Kaija Gahm, and Karl Bardon saw a PACIFIC LOON fly past the Hawk Ridge overlook on the 14th, and on the 11th they saw a flyby SHORT-EARED OWL. They reported their first PINE GROSBEAK on the 9th, their first NORTHERN SHRIKE on the 10th, and their first COMMON REDPOLLS on the 15th. Clinton Nienhaus also saw COMMON REDPOLLS on the 9th in Cook County.
Herb Dingmann found an EARED GREBE on the 9th at Brighton Beach in east Duluth. Alex Lamoreaux saw an adult ROSS'S GOOSE on the 12th at the mouth of Miller Creek at 27th Avenue West. Joy Teigland reported the first SNOW BUNTING of the season on the 11th at the Duluth Lakewalk.
Peder Svingen saw two SURF SCOTERS, a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, and a RED-THROATED LOON on the 9th near the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point. Peder saw the continuing first-cycle CALIFORNIA GULL on the 9th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was found by Jan and Larry Kraemer on the 9th at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors. They also saw two SURF SCOTERS at Flood Bay on the 9th. A SURF SCOTER was seen on the 12th and 14th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.
