This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 9th, 2016 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The immature IVORY GULL at Canal Park in Duluth has been seen every day by many observers since being found by Jan and Larry Kraemer on the 1st. Brian Murdock found a second immature bird dead in Superior on the 5th under the Blatnik Bridge. ICELAND GULLS, THAYER'S GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and at least four late-lingering RING-BILLED GULLS continue to be seen at Canal Park in Duluth.

John Richardson relocated the GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at first light on the 8th at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth. Birders are welcome to look for the bird but the homeowner asks observers to stay on the sidewalk and not venture into his yard. A flock of more than 400 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS has been seen recently in the upper Woodland neighborhood of Duluth, especially around Everett Street, Morningside Avenue, and Allendale Avenue.

A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen by Clinton Nienhaus and others on the 5th at the Grand Marais Harbor. They also saw nine LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Good Harbor Bay west of Grand Marais. John Richardson saw four LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 8th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors. Two HORNED GREBES were seen here on the 4th. John saw two RED-NECKED GREBES on the 6th at Stony Point

Nathan Goldberg and Sulli Gibson saw three SPRUCE GROUSE on the 6th along Lake County Road 2 near the Sand River. Stephen Rossiter saw two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 8th along the Spruce Road in northern Lake County, but I don't have specific locations. BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS are also being reported along the McDavitt and Admiral Road in the Sax-Zim Bog. Two GYRFALCONS are being seen almost daily near the Peavey elevator and Connor's Point off US Highway 53 in Superior. One is an adult gray-morph and the other is a dark gray/intermediate morph juvenile. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS are also being seen in the area and in the Port Terminal of Duluth.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, January 14th.
