This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday July 5th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several species of shorebird were found July 4th at Bisson Lake on the north end of Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Becker County. Birds reported include GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER. LEAST SANDPIPERS were found on July 2nd near the junction of Hennepin County road 81 and Old Territorial Road in Maple Grove.
Most unusual were the four AMERICAN AVOCETS reported July 3rd at pool number 8 of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife & Fish Refuge. They were seen three and a half miles south-southeast of Brownsville in Houston County.
The WHITE-EYED VIREO can still be seen at Rice Lake State Park in Steele County. Look near the trail that begins south of the boat landing. One adult and one juvenile were seen as recently as the 4th.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD is still at Chester Woods in Olmsted County. It was originally found on June 28th in the vicinity of the small pond near the boat launch parking lot and it was seen there again on the 30th.
A young MUTE SWAN was found June 30th at Pig's Eye plant just south of the Warner Road along U.S. highway 61 in south St. Paul, Ramsey County.
A BELL'S VIREO was found near Black Dog Trail in Dakota County on June 30th. From the Cliff Road parking lot it was about a ten minute walk eastward from the beginning of the trail in the small willows below the power lines.
On June 27th Ron Erpelding found a ROSS'S GOOSE near Lake Lillian in Kandiyohi County. From the town of Lake Lillian go north on county road 8 to the "T" at the lake. Turn left and look for the bird on the west side of the road in a wet field just beyond the fertilizer plant about 1/2 mile from the "T".
