This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 19th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On July 18th, Warren Nelson found a GREAT GRAY OWL east of Aitkin in Aitkin County. From Aitkin, take state highway 47 east and south for 8 1/2 miles to county road 4. Turn east on 4 for 3/4 mile. The owl was seen in the tamaracks on the both sides of the road here. A second Great Gray is has been seen by Warren along Aitkin county road 18 about two miles west of county road 5. He also reports that there are at least six SHORT-EARED OWLS in the county, and the most active is a pair about six miles north of Aitkin along county road 1.
Oscar Johnson found a pair of MUTE SWANS on July 14th in Anoka County. They were at the junction of state highway 242 and Coon Creek Blvd. Coon Creek Blvd is one block east of U.S. highway 10.
Chris Benson found BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS in northern Lake County on July 14th along the Spruce Road at its junction with the Endless Waters Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES were also in the area.
Cole Foster reported a HENSLOW'S SPARROW in Washington County on the 14th at the north end of Afton State Park. It was in a field south of 50th St. and about a half mile east of county road 21. Look for the tree-lined trail running south of 50th St. labeled "Historic Cooney Road." The sparrow was found about a hundred yards down this trail on the left.
