This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Tuesday April 30th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On April 24th, a male PAINTED BUNTING was found at a feeder in Aitkin County just southeast of the town of Aitkin. After 4:00 PM you can call John Richardson for directions at 218-829-2119.
Karl Bardon found two CALIFORNIA GULLS in Clay County on the 25th. They were at the Clay County landfill, which is located two and a half miles south of U.S. highway 10 on county road 23.
A SAY'S PHOEBE was found on the 29th along Clearwater County Road 64/48. From the town of Gonvick drive north on county road 7 to county road 64 and turn left. The bird was seen one and a quarter miles west near the house at fire number C29-1. Another Say's Phoebe was seen on the 26th at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County. Kiki Sonen found it at the Louisburg Bottoms just south of the old quarry.
On the 26th a WESTERN TANAGER was reported from the Croftville Road in Cook County, just north of Grand Marais. It was found near a group of white cabins about half a mile down the road. A second Western Tanager was reported from nearby Grand Marais at the downtown library. And in Wabasha, Wabasha County a Western Tanager was at the feeder of Grant Schuth on the 27th.
A CLARK'S GREBE was in with several WESTERN GREBES on Thielke Lake in Big Stone County on the 27th.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was found in Becker County on the 25th at Hamden Slough Refuge. Check the pond southwest of Bisson Pond.
Jim Pomplun found a CINNAMON TEAL at the Old Cedar Avenue bridge area in Bloomington on the 28th. It's being seen in the east pond along the Hogback Trail. Look in the backwater to the left as you walk towards the new Cedar Avenue bridge.
A PIPING PLOVER was found on the 29th at the Marsh Lake Dam just off Swift County Road 51. Four AMERICAN AVOCETS were also present. In the past several days American Avocets were also seen in Kandiyohi County at Olson Lake which is about four miles south of the town of Priam; at Salt Lake in Lac Qui Parle County; at the Lewiston sewage lagoons in Winona County; and at the north end of Hamden Slough in Becker County.
Other recent reports include migrant GREEN HERON, WILLET, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and HARRIS'S SPARROW.
