On June 29th Katie Haws found five nesting pairs of PIPING PLOVERS on Lake of the Woods. She also saw over 4000 FRANKLIN'S GULLS at Pine and Curry Island SNA.

During a Breeding Bird Survey in western Beltrami Co. Katie found SPOTTED SANDPIPER, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, SAVANNAH SPARROW, BOBOLINK, both BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and CEDAR WAXWINGS plus nesting RED-NECKED GREBES on Blackduck Lake.

On June 24th and 30th at the Buffalo River Bird Monitoring Station in Clay Co., Joe Gartner reports some of the birds banded or observed were: FERRUGINOUS HAWK, INDIGO BUNTING, VEERY, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, UPLAND SANDPIPER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and SCARLET TANAGER. Note: The banding station will only be operated three more mornings - July 10, 22 and 30. Anyone interested in assisting or visiting the station should call Joe at 218-483-3016 evenings.

>From Lake Bronson State Park, Gladwin Lynne reports many SHORT-EARED OWLS, SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and COOPER'S HAWKS, NORTHERN HARRIER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, SCARLET TANAGER, SNOW GOOSE, HOODED MERGANSER with young, BLACK TERNS, and FORSTER'S TERNS.

Doug Johnson found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER 4 miles south and 3 miles east of Nevis in Hubbard Co. on June 30th while doing a butterfly count.

Jeanie Joppru and Shelley Steva visited the Warren lagoons and vicinity in Marshall Co. on July 1st . Birds recorded in the area included LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, LEAST SANDPIPER, KILLDEER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, EARED GREBE, two SNOW GEESE and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD. In and around Thief River Falls in Pennington Co., Jeanie found a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and a MERLIN.

At the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co. on July 6th, a total of 34 adult COMMON LOONS and three loon chicks were seen on the north and south basins of Tamarac Lake. A HORNED GREBE was seen on Mud Lake and 23 TRUMPETER SWANS were observed on several other refuge lakes. On July 7th a pair of EVENING GROSBEAKS were in the visitor center yard feeding a fledgling.
