GREAT GRAY OWLS and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS continue to be seen regularly in the northwest, most birds this week being reported from Lake of the Woods and Beltrami Counties. Both species have been reported along Hwy. 89 between Fourtown and its junction with Hwy. 1; along Hwy. 72 between Waskish and Baudette and along various roads in the Beltrami Island State Forest and Red Lake Wildlife Management Area. One great gray was observed plunging into the snow after prey - along Dick's Parkway in the Red Lake WMA about half way down the west boundary. An interesting non-bird sighting along this road was that of a bobcat!
Some specific NORTHERN HAWK OWL locations were: 1) At the junction of Hwy. 71 and Hubbard CR 9, about 4 miles south of Bemidji. 2) Along Hwy. 89 about 1.5 miles SE of Fourtown. 3) One mile west of Hwy. 72 on the Upper Red Lake's North Shore Drive 4) Four miles NE of Waskish on an unmarked township road near a cattle feedlot with five BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES. 5) Just north of the Beltrami/Lake of the Woods County line along on Hwy. 72 6) Along Lake of the Woods CR 8 between Roosevelt and Zippel Bay State Park.
A SNOWY OWL was reported on the 1st from Otter Tail Co. two miles south of Hwy. 210 on the east side of Hwy. 29.
Two BOREAL CHICKADEES were also found along the Upper Red Lake's North Shore Drive, two miles west of Hwy. 72.
PINE GROSBEAKS were reported from several areas this week. Over 25 birds were seen at Norris Camp in the Red Lake WMA. In the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co., including at the visitor center feeders on CR 26; along CR 143; along CR 35 on the west side of Round Lake near the Tamarac Resort and just southeast of the refuge boundary at the Height of Land Lake outlet of the Otter Tail River.
The Warren area Christmas Bird Count was conducted on the 31st. Some highlights included: COOPER'S HAWK, BROWN CREEPER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PINE GROSBEAK.
The Battle Lake (Otter Tail Co.) Christmas Bird Count was also conducted on the 31st with a total of 37 species recorded. Some noteworthy birds included a "RED-SHAFTED" NORTHERN FLICKER, SNOWY OWL, BARRED OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, HORNED LARK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.
Other birds reported this week were COMMON GOLDENEYE, BALD EAGLE, BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BROWN CREEPER and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
