Certainly, the most interesting bird to report this week is that of a BRAMBLING coming to a home west of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County. Birders are asked not to visit now until December 26th or 27th and viewing should be only from the upper deck of the house during daylight hours. Directions from the town of Battle Lake: Follow CR 83 west to CR 122. Turn left onto CR 122 and go approximately .25 miles to Big Buck Road. Turn right onto Big Buck Road and follow it for 1.2 miles to the fork. Take the right fork and follow it to the dead end. Walk up onto the deck on the left side of the house and go around to the back. The bird generally comes in with a flock of goldfinches and may occur anywhere in the yard, although it seems to prefer some cover and is often seen near the brush pile.
A VARIED THRUSH is visiting the Hartnesses on the east side of Cotton Lake in Becker Co. and was seen as recently as 9:00 am on the 21st. Take Becker CR 29 north from State Hwy. 34, east of Detroit Lakes. The address is 21246 CR 29 and is well marked. The bird is most often seen between the house and the lake in the area of the crab apple tree. The homeowner welcomes birders during daylight hours, except for December 24th and 25th.
Three NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were seen about 2 miles south of the Canadian border in the Roseau Bog area of Roseau County on the 18th. One bird was near Hwy. 310 and the other two were seen briefly together about 1.3 miles east of Hwy. 310 along the trail that parallels the ditch. A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen in the same area as the two owls mentioned above.
In the city of Roseau, Roseau Co., a flock of 75-100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on the 18th.
In the Beltrami Island State Forest, three GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen on the 19th. One bird was just west of the intersection of Dick's Parkway and the Winner Forest Road near the Roseau/Lake of the Woods Co. line. Unfortunately, the location of the other birds was not described adequately enough to report.
At the Norris Camp feeders, Lake of the Woods Co., birds present this week included PINE GROSBEAKS and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Other birds in the area included BALD EAGLE, BOREAL CHICKADEE and COMMON REDPOLL.
A number of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS have been reported this week. Several birds were seen on the 19th between Skime and Grygla, where the road runs along the Marshall/Beltrami County line. On the 17th, four ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen in the Bisson Lake area of the Hamden Slough NWR, near the intersection of Becker CRs 13 and 14. Five birds were near the Pembina Trail WMA, at the edge of Pennington and Polk Counties, on the 16th.
Two SNOWY OWLS were seen in Becker County this week. On the 18th, a bird was along CR 37 approximately 3.5 miles north of it's junction with CR 26. On the 19th, another bird was along CR 15 approximately ½ mile north of its junction with CR 22.
The Fergus Falls CBC on the 15th produced 52 species. Some highlights were 12 species of waterfowl, including a GREATER SCAUP and PIED-BILLED GREBE. Count week species included VARIED THRUSH and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT.
The Fargo-Moorhead CBC was also done on the 15th, and preliminary results showed 39 species, including SANDHILL CRANE, LESSER SCAUP, COMMON MERGANSER and record numbers of AMERICAN ROBINS.
Other birds reported in the northwest this week included: TRUMPETER SWAN, RED-TAILED HAWK, NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, RUSTY BLACKBIRD and SNOW BUNTING.
