Two VARIED THRUSH are in the northwest this week. One bird remains at the Hartness residence, at 21246 CR 29, along the east side of Cotton Lake in Becker County. The bird is usually seen between the house and the lake in the area of the crab apple tree. Visitors may walk around the south side of the house. Another bird was discovered on 01/03 in Otter Tail County. From the town of Battle Lake, take Hwy. 78 north to CR 72. Turn onto 72 and follow it to Pine Tree Road. Turn onto Pine Tree Road and go 0.1 mile to the log home. Feeders are scattered around the yard and visitors are asked to view only from the road.
A total of six SNOWY OWLS have been reported this past week. One bird is in the area of Becker CR's 14 & 13 at Hamden Slough NWR; another bird was along Polk CR 20, 3.5 miles north of Polk CR 21; a 3rd bird was 7 miles west of the Wetlands, Pines & Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in Polk Co.; a 4th bird was 5 miles north of the town of Warren in Marshall Co.; a 5th bird was along Roseau CR 19 were it turns west to skirt the south edge of Hayes Lake State Park; and the 6th bird was 1.5 miles north of State Hwy. 11 along Roseau CR 31.
Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were reported this week. One bird was seen on 12/31 about ½ mile northeast of Cecil's Landing on the Roosevelt Forest Road, Roseau Co. and the other on 1/3/02 at the Red Lake WMA in Lake of the Woods Co. This bird was just southeast of the Norris Campground along the Faunce-Butterfield Forest Road.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen on the 1st, 9 miles south of Warroad on Roseau CR 5, then ½ mile east on the Tangnes Forest Road, then ½ mile south on the logging road.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was reported from the Wetlands, Pines & Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in Polk Co. on 12/30. Two more NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were along Hwy. 72 in Beltrami Co, just south of the Lake of the Woods Co. line.
Other birds mentioned this week were rough-legged hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, wild turkey, mourning dove, short-eared owl, black-backed woodpecker, northern shrike, red-breasted nuthatch, Northern cardinal, Bohemian waxwing, snow bunting, American tree sparrow, red crossbill, white-winged crossbill, common redpoll, pine grosbeak and evening grosbeak.
