On June 12th, John Richardson found two SWAINSON'S HAWKS at the Tympanuchus Prairie along Polk CR 45. (Site #18 on the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail) He also found three singing NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS at the SE corner of the junction of Polk CR 44 and U.S. Hwy. 2.
Bob Scherzer reported a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, WILSON'S PHALAROPES and three AMERICAN AVOCETS at the Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County on the 7th. A pair of avocets are nesting at Hamden, but entry to this area is restricted to minimize disturbance. If the nesting attempt is successful, that information will be passed along.
At the Tamarac NWR in Becker County, birds reported this week included COMMON LOONS with chicks, TRUMPETER SWANS with cygnets, MALLARD and BLUE-WINGED TEAL broods, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, RUFFED GROUSE with chicks, CASPIAN TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER and PINE SISKIN.
Because of the flooding in parts of northwestern Minnesota, especially in areas around Roseau, Warroad, the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, etc., birders are advised to call ahead to check on conditions.
