The BAIRD'S SPARROW originally found by John Richardson at The Nature Conservancy's Glacial Ridge Project in Polk County on the 18th has been observed by a number of birders over the past week. Directions to the site are to go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Hwy. 2 from its junction with State Hwy. 32, then turn south unto the gravel pit road. Go past the office and follow the middle road SE one mile from Hwy. 2. The sparrow's territory is on the west side of the road between the road and the large concrete slab. Other birds found at Glacial Ridge this week included GRAY PARTRIDGE, UPLAND SANDPIPER, DICKCISSEL, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
At Rydell NWR, also in Polk County, birds reported this week included TRUMPETER SWANS with two cygnets at the office, AMERICAN BITTERN on the north shore of Round Lake and nesting yellow warblers adjacent to the sundew bog walk. Visitor Center hours are Thursday through Sunday from 12 noon to 8 pm. The entrance gate is open 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday and you may park at the visitor center and walk the trails even though the building is closed.
On the 22nd, Mark Otnes found a calling NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW in Wilkin County along CR 15, about 100 yards south of its intersection with CR 188.
Sean Conklin reported hearing a WOOD THRUSH calling on the 23rd on the west end of the lake at Hayes Lake State Park in Roseau County. Other birds observed included COMMON LOON and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.
