Winter is approaching fast as evidenced by the first sighting of a snowy owl in North Dakota north of Grand Forks lagoons, on November 2nd. Keep your eyes open- can Minnesota be far behind?

A SUMMER TANAGER came to a feeder in Thief River Falls on November 5th. The bird was an immature reported by Shelley Steva from whom information and directions can be obtained. Her email address is crossbill7200@yahoo.com . As of Thursday, the bird was still coming to the feeder from time to time throughout the day.

>From Ottertail County, Alma Ronningen reports a female NORTHERN CARDINAL in her yard. Also present were a HARRIS'S SPARROW, a pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and the expected DARK-EYED JUNCOS and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES. Also in Ottertail County, Roland Jordahl saw TRUMPETER SWANS, a BALD EAGLE, and RING-BILLED GULLS by the Ottertail River, and near Maplewood State Park, more eagles and a cold GREAT BLUE HERON.

In Wilkin County, Rick Gjervold found 11 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS in the prairie chicken habitat at Rothsay Prairie about five miles southwest of Lawndale, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and SNOW BUNTINGS.

Rick has also been seeing GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, about 50 at a time at the Bicentennial Prairie southeast of Felton in Clay County. Mel and Elaine Bennefeld birded at Buffalo State Park, also in Clay County, on November 6th and they saw a MERLIN, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and a male RUSTY BLACKBIRD, along with many SONG SPARROWS, CHIPPING SPARROWS, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS.

Leon and Donna Thoreson in Polk County have HARRIS'S SPARROWS, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW as well as the usual year round residents. Shelley Steva found AMERICAN KESTREL, and 75 LAPLAND LONGSPURS near Sherack, and a BALD EAGLE near the Pembina WMA on November 6th. I saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near the Burnham Creek WMA on Saturday, November 2nd.

Pennington County birds this week include a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK spotted flying over Thief River Falls by Shelley Steva on November 3rd. A trip to the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on November 2nd yielded sightings of PIED-BILLED GREBE, a variety of ducks including GADWALL, MALLARD, CANVASBACK, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and RUDDY DUCK, there were two BALD EAGLES on the ice with a third circling overhead. No doubt the adults had brought their young to try out lagoon "hunting". A WESTERN MEADOWLARK flew up on our way out. At our house on Monday, November 4th, we could see AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD and WOOD DUCK on the Red Lake River, and there was a MOURNING DOVE at the feeder.On Wednesday morning a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited us.

At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, Gary Huschle reports that there was still one GREAT EGRET hanging around last week, and there were still a number of GREAT BLUE HERONS there on November 4th.

>From Lake of the Woods County, Gretchen Mehmel reported near Norris Camp: 3 SPRUCE GROUSE, 6 GRAY JAYS, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, one AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and many crossbills of undetermined species.
