This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday,October 11,2002 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

With the cooler weather, this is a good time to see the autumn colors which are about at peak beauty right now in the northwest.

Mike Murphy of Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge called to say there is a GLOSSY IBIS in the refuge. The bird was identified in the Hass Wetland along Becker County 104 about 2 miles northeast of the town of Audubon. While they were viewing the bird it flew to the adjacent Hesby Wetland which has a parking lot and a path around the wetland. He also reported that the water levels were such that there were many shorebirds in the refuge, and the ibis may be moving around so it would be good to check out the whole area.

A SPOTTED TOWHEE was seen briefly in the yard of Steve Millard in Fergus Falls, Ottertail County, earlier this week. Steve has been unable to refind it in the last few days. Also in Ottertail County on October 8, a SNOWY EGRET was reported by Eddy Edwards on Rush Lake WPA approximately 3 miles west of Fergus Falls on County Road 15.

Polk County birds found this week at the Glacial Ridge Project included SANDHILL CRANE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Sparrows included SAVANNAH SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, HARRIS SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO. Other Polk County birds were BALD EAGLE, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, MERLIN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 10 AMERICAN PIPITS, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

>From Ottertail County, Eddy Edwards also reported a small flock of SNOW GEESE two miles west of Underwood on County Road 122 on the 8th of October. He also caught an OVENBIRD in his garage- the bird must have taken a wrong turn at the mailbox! Jeff Schultz reported a mixed flock of warblers in Ottertail with the ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS outnumbering the YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. He also had a late RED-EYED VIREO on October 5th , and on October 7th, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HARRIS SPARROWS, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS. From Steve Millard I have a report of a number of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS in the area.

Thanks to Mike Murphy, Eddy Edwards, Steve Millard, and Jeff Schultz for their reports.
